Protect your team with a flu vaccine clinic

As the days start to get colder, we are all at a higher risk for the common flu (influenza). Offering a vaccine clinic, or time off to get a vaccine, is a simple and cost-effective way to protect yourself and your staff. The influenza vaccine is proven to be effective in preventing both mild and severe outcomes.

Benefits of Workplace Flu Vaccinations

While in many cases the flu is mild, it can result in severe outcomes which, as an employer, means your team potentially being away from the office. The influenza vaccine helps to prevent the spread of the flu and minimise severe illness.

Having a flu vaccine clinic available at work benefits both employees and the employer. Top benefits include:

  • Reduced Absenteeism: Flu vaccines can decrease the number of days that employees are absent from work due to illness, creating a more consistent workflow.
  • Enhanced Employee Wellbeing: Offering flu vaccines shows that you care about your employees’ health and wellbeing.
  • Community health protection: Vaccinated employees are less likely to get sick and spread illness to others, this protects vulnerable populations who are unable to get vaccinated, increasing the broader community health.

Health Benefits of Immunisation

Beyond the workplace benefits, immunising against influenza has personal health benefits.

  • Reduced risk of heart attack and stroke: Cardiovascular deaths go up during a bad influenza season. Peoples’ risk of heart attack goes up by 7-10 times for a week after catching influenza, and 12% of influenza cases in hospital have a heart attack or stroke. Influenza can cause heart attacks and strokes by destabilizing plaques inside blood vessels and by placing a high load on the heart and circulatory system (Immunisation Advisory Centre, 2026).

So, how does vaccination prevent heart attacks and strokes?

When is the best time to immunise?

Flu season typically lasts approximately 13 weeks in the winter months, in New Zealand it peaks from late July to early August. The vaccine is most effective within the first three to four months, making mid to late April the ideal time to get immunised. Starting too early is not recommended as the effectiveness does decline over time.
